Stocking Filler Gifts

Stocking Filler Gifts

Stockings are one of those Christmas traditions that never lose their charm. No matter how old you get, waking up to that bundle of small surprises still feels special. I was just as excited to get a stocking last year as an adult as I was when I was little. The rustle of wrapping paper, the guessing game of what’s inside, the small but brilliant mix of treats and treasures. Stocking filler gifts might be small, but they have a way of stealing the spotlight.

For children, stockings are pure excitement from the moment they wake up. Think toys and trinkets that bring instant joy; the sort of things they’ll be playing with before breakfast. A few classics always earn their place: chocolate coins, bubble wands, and those little wind-up toys that end up racing across the kitchen table. But it’s the unexpected additions that make them memorable.

A pack of Spiderman Playing Cards by theory11 adds just the right amount of superhero sparkle. They look amazing, and they’re a great way to fill the post-present lull with a few quick games. The Disney Princess Playing Cards by Bicycle are beautiful and full of charm, perfect for kids who love a bit of sparkle. We’ve also got Tokyo Revengers Playing Cards and other anime decks for older children and teens who’ve outgrown toys but still love something collectable and cool. Once all the presents are opened and the roast potatoes are in the oven, playing cards will be the first thing everyone reaches for.

Of course, not everything in a stocking has to be themed around playing. A few creative bits always go down well: small Lego sets, badge-making kits, or something crafty like friendship bracelet threads or mini painting sets. For little readers, a slim paperback, puzzle book, or comic is ideal - it’s the kind of gift that keeps them busy long after the wrapping paper’s cleared. And if you want to add something a bit different, try a small jigsaw puzzle or a snow globe (nostalgic, festive, and impossible to resist shaking).

Sweet treats are a must, obviously. Chocolate Santas, candy canes, or a little jar of their favourite sweets are always hits. You could even make it a bit more personal - a hot chocolate cone with marshmallows and sprinkles, or a tiny baking kit so they can make cookies later in the day. It’s a nice way to stretch the fun into Christmas afternoon.

Now, let’s not pretend stockings are just for kids. Adults secretly love them too…maybe even more. The trick is to fill them with small luxuries and clever surprises. Mini bottles of gin, whisky, or prosecco feel festive without breaking the bank. A fancy chocolate bar or small bag of artisan coffee adds a touch of indulgence. Skincare minis, hand cream, or lip balm are always handy, especially in winter. You could even sneak in something that’s half-fun, half-practical, like novelty socks (yes, we still love them), or a pocket-sized notebook for all those new year ideas.

If you want to go a bit quirkier, think of gifts that make people smile - a funny enamel pin, a fridge magnet from an inside joke, or a keyring that means something personal. Small candles are another great option, especially if they smell like Christmas (cinnamon, pine, or gingerbread always hit the right note). A few sweets never go amiss either; even grown-ups appreciate a chocolate orange or a bag of retro pick ’n’ mix.

One year, I found a bauble in my stocking with the most awful photo of me inside. It was embarrassing. It was horrifying. It was hilarious! And honestly, it ended up being one of my favourite Christmas memories. A personalised Christmas decoration is a great idea for that reason - fun, thoughtful, and guaranteed to make an appearance on the tree every year after.

The best stockings are the ones that mix a little nostalgia with a few new surprises; part tradition, part “oh, that’s clever.” It’s about the thought behind each item, not the price tag or the size. Something fun, something useful, and something that shows you know them.
